Chapter Eleven

Fingers fumbled in a tangle of clothing. A rush of male breaths mingled with muffled feminine sighs. Passion sparked and quickly raged out of control. Patience raked Rawden’s hair, as he tugged at the bodice of her gown and then loosened her chemise, baring her for his perusal. She should have shied away from him, yet she grew emboldened by his praise. When he bent his head and set his lips to her sensitive flesh, she bit the underside of her thumb to stifle her cries of pleasure. In a teasing yet delicious torment, he grazed his teeth to her—

“Patience, are you listening to me?” Arabella asked with unveiled exasperation and clapped twice. “Where are you, and what are you thinking?”

“Er—nothing.” Patience pressed her palm to her heated cheek, as the memory of her tryst in the Rockingham study captured her senses. Rawden had been fervent yet inexpressibly gentle, which disarmed her, and she realized she would have given him anything he wanted had he requested more of her. But in the midst of their heated rendezvous, he suddenly brought everything to a halt, much to her frustration and disappointment. There were times when the man could be too noble for her pride. “So, you wanted to continue my questionable lessons.”

“I will, in a moment.” Arabella narrowed her stare, and Patience squirmed, because she knew what loomed but not how to avoid the interrogation. “I want to know what happened between you and Lord Beaulieu, after you arrived for the impromptu reception that followed the meeting with the Wakefield Commission. Or did you think your extended absence went unnoticed? Even Anthony inquired after you.”

“It was nothing.” Occupying a table near the front window in a crowded Gunter’s, Patience shrugged and toyed with the neige de pistachio, her favorite flavor. How was she supposed to help her future husband if he refused to be seduced? “Rawden, that is, Lord Beaulieu was upset, and I merely offered comfort.”

“In what form?” Arabella arched a brow and compressed her lips. “And I know you too well, my dear. You are distracted, and I am privy to the manner of distraction Beaulieu employs where you are concerned, because the man is nothing if not consistent.” Then she frowned. “Pray, I should like to get you to the altar sans scandal. Once you are the Countess of Beaulieu, you may surrender your maidenhood and anything else you like to your husband, and I will applaud you. Please, tell me you indulged in nothing more than a few illicit kisses and caresses.”

“Of course.” Well, that wasn’t entirely true, but Patience would die before she admitted it. Some things were just too personal to air in public, even to a lifelong friend, especially when she could not understand her man’s reaction. Why did her groom cease his play? Did he not desire her? No. That was not the case. Beaulieu desired her. She knew it as sure as she knew her name, yet something stayed him. “But Lord Beaulieu can be rather persuasive.
